The not-so-pleasant Phuket trip

My friend and I went to Phuket at the end of August. This was my forth time to Phuket, and I could still remember the same beaches and markets I had visited previously. Not much have changed.

We decided to stay in Kata, about 15 minutes from Patong, and a much quieter area. We stayed at Metadee Resort, a fairly new resort which has only been opened for a year.

Here is the view of the main area of the pool that stretches all around the resort. There is also a pretty good gym, small but adequate. The restrooms by the restaurant/pool was also very impressive. Very clean, new and fully air-conditioned.

We were starving by the time we reached the resort! We had lunch in the resort's only restaurant,

called Himapan.

Villa 4103 (the one I stayed in) is the BEST!!

Double sinks, separate shower and toilet, huge bathtub......

Note: The shower & toilet has only ONE door, so if someone is in the shower, the sliding door to the shower closes so someone can't use the toilet at the same time. Well, technically you can, I guess this type of concept is more suited for couples. Also, there is a very large hole (eye level) between the shower and the toilet. Definitely a lack of privacy here.

The best times were spent by the pool. The weather was perfect. Blistering hot you can feel the heat

Me at Kata beach. I have to stay, I was somewhat disappointed as the beach had garbage laying around and the beach at Patong was just nicer.

This little bus stop looking booth sits about 300m (or so) from our resort. Guests can actually pick up the phone and it'll automatically call the resort for a buggy to pick us up.

The not-so-pleasant part of the trip was because I got a very bad (and by that, I mean REALLY BAD) case of food poisoning on the second day. One that had me on the loo several times a day and then crawling back to bed, crunching my stomach in extreme pain and forking out over 200 bucks (thank god for medical benefits at work!) for a doctor to come to the resort. Despite that, I was still not well when I returned to Singapore.

Guys, let me give you some advice here. There is no easy way to say this, but if you have a crush on a girl and have made it clear to her that you like her, and you find out her feelings for you is not mutual, please don't probe and push the issue further. There is nothing worse than this kind of confrontation. I've recently had *several* confrontations with a guy who kept asking me why I don't have feelings for him. My answer? "I'm sorry, but I'm just not attracted to you." Hey I may be a bitch here but at least I'm honest! His reply? "Why not?" Hmmmmm.........I was confused. How do you explain to someone you are just not attracted to them? How do you explain chemistry? Physical attraction? A spark? Why you get butterflies in your stomach? On national day, Horse, Winnie and I headed out for our usual brunch, but this time we decided to try Halia, a small, but stylish restaurant in the middle of the Botantical Gardens.

We were late for their brunch menu which ended at 3pm but staff were very accommodating and agreed to let us have our selection from their brunch menu.

Delicious!

I watched Aftershock a couple of days ago. It is a new foreign movie released July/August 2010. It is the most brilliant and emotionally heartwarming movie ever. I really hope it wins an oscar as the Best Foreign film of the year. I don't think anyone can finish watching this movie without sheding a single tear. As for me, I sat in the cinema crying buckets and stiffling back more tears.

Synopsis

When a mother is informed by the rescue team that, as her 7-year old twins are buried under the debris close to each other, digging one out would result in further collapse of the wreckage on the other, she is forced to make the most difficult decision of her life. As the clock ticked away, she finally ended her struggle and chose to save the boy, and though heartbroken, she had no idea her decision was overheard by the daughter. Deemed as a dead person, the little girl miraculously survived and was rescued after being buried for days. Suffering from the emotional shock of the disaster and the painful memory of her mother's choice, she refused to reveal who she was. She was adopted by a young couple and later moved to the US, but shadowed by the traumatic experience from her childhood; she forever remained emotionally closed up.

When the Sichuan earthquake takes over 80,000 lives in 2008, she volunteers to join the rescue team and returns to her homeland, China. As she witnesses the tribulations people go through when a natural disaster takes place, she finally unlocks the pain she had felt all these years and finds forgiveness. She finally reunites with the mother and twin brother she had parted from after 32 years. A human drama about finding forgiveness, 'Aftershock' depicts not only the fatal tragedy that is brought on by natural disaster of great levels but also the strength and courage that is demonstrated when we are in face of extreme and devastating situations.

Long Weekend Trip to Kuala Lumpur

My friend and I headed to Kuala Lumpur, which is the capital city of Malaysia over the long weekend at the end of May. This was only my third trip to KL since I moved to Singapore seven years ago, despite its neighbourly location.

Pavilion is one of the newer shopping malls in KL, including a pretty big Forever 21 store. It's big, clean and spacious, a landmark for tourists.

We stayed at The Legend Hotel, which claims it is'"5 stars" but it really isn't. The hotel is big, spacious and accomodating. But some things remain to be said, like their carpark is shockingly old and somewhat deserted. The rooms were indeed spacious but lacks warmth, and is starting to look worn out. Guests have to take two lifts, one to go to the lobby on the 9th floor to "transfer" to a different set of lifts to go to the guestrooms.

Jalan Imbi, which is actually very near to Pavilion, has some good local eating joints. I always think when you're in a different country, its good to eat where the locals eat. A word of warning though, this is not the sort of place if you're looking for air-conditioning and something that passes the health food inspector.

Surprisingly, I noticed that KL has quite a few Pancake eateries, which made my mouth water each time I walked past the sweet smelling shop, something one cannot find easily in Singapore. The Pancake place at Pavilion (basement) is hip with their bright orange interiors, however, food took ages to come and I reckon MacDonalds hotcakes beats their blueberry pancakes.

This place, known as The Curve (close to One Utama) is beautiful, with its romantic lights glistening from above. There is a starbucks here and several eateries, massage parlours, bars and even a small market.

We headed to one of the bars called Laundry at The Curve. The place is quite happening with a dancefloor, rocking music and packed with tourists.

I didn't take any pictures of the place, but there is a huge shopping mall located at One Utama, which is something different if you wanna explore the suburbs.

Minifesto 2010

My friend, who spins around in a stylish citrine-golden mini invited me along to this year's Minifesto that was held on 15-16 May at the F1 curcuit. I've never been to anything like this before, but lets just say after the event, I had a new profound love for mini coopers. I think the highlight for me was seeing all these minis lined up next to each other in the parking lot. From the classics to convertibles to the limited editions, it was definately something worth going there for. I've always thought minis were meant for girls, so to speak, but was actually quite surprised that most of the minis were in fact, driven by men!

There were various games, even free candy floss and delicious popcorn for the taking. There were mini merchandise, a live band and celebrity DJs Glenn Ong and Vernetta Lopez live at the scene.

I'll take the red mini, thanks!

JP Morgan Corporate Challenge

It was on May 6, 2010 that I ran my first ever marathon. Some may say, 5.6km really is no big deal. Some wouldn't even call it a marathon. More than 12,000 participants, every age, every size and nationality all congested at the starting line waiting eagerly to start the race. For me, it was ever so exciting to be a part of this with my colleagues and I felt a rush each time I saw a team-mate on the way to the finish line.

Towards the end, dying of thirst and sweating like a pig, I was muttering to myself, "gee, nice move signing up for this chickie..." while attempting to make my legs work by banging my head to Bon Jovi, thank god I bought my i-pod along!

Ten of us ran for our firm, and I clocked in 4th at 46.19 mins though that's nothing to brag about. If I get the chance to participate next year, I'm gonna try my damnest to beat my time!

For the record, the French sure can run!

A couple of weekends ago, my sis got me hooked on a Korean tv drama, Princess Hours, and I really don't have time to explain now (since its already 7:33 in the morning and I have to leave for work in half an hour and am still in my pjs!) but basically, my Alfred got her name from Prince Shin's teddy, Alfred.

Belle de Jour? Have you heard of her, coz I certainly haven't until I came across this book in a local bookstore. Belle de Jour (and such a lovely name I might add) is the pseudonym of a former London call girl. She actually became 'famous' first with her blog and subsequently, two volumes of diaries about "the Adventures of a London Call Girl". This book is such a light, easy read, full of witty humor and quite resourceful for single gals who are in 'transition' periods (i.e. between relationships, lost and confused, spinster living, etc...). According to Belle, there are three types of girls. 1. The Good Girl aka GG 2. The Plain Jane aka PJ (aka Me) 3. The Scary Bitch (SB) In short, GG's are "also known as the high maintenance girl. If you ask men straight out, they will say this is their nightmare woman because she has both rules and expectations. Basically, someone who knows what she wants and is not prepared to settle for anything less." Page 19. The author also says that the GG , simply by expecting things like flowers and gifts, manages to atract more men than any other type. Men realise, either through instuction or instinct, that this is a lady who requires keeping in the manner to which she is accustomed. However, most men cannot be bothered once they find out about the GG's rules. Plain Janes (PJ), also known as the girl next door. "Contrary to what the name implies, PJ's can actually be rather hot - but always in an understated way." Belle describes PJ's as "most often finds herself in a series of monogamous relationships, probably lived with at least one boyfriend, an can expect marriage in her 30s....PJs experience the least disruption to their lives as the result of their dating/relationship patterns, for the most part because they are rarely single". The PJ has been one half of a couple for so long, it can be difficult to remember her name not linked to someone else. Now, the Scary Bitch. Honestly I can't really relate to SB but I'll give Belle's description nonetheless. "Blatantly, to a man's point of view (the Scary Bitch) is not marriage nor even cohabitation material". p21. "The SB is the kind of sex you want. Not always when you want it, not always with whom you want it, but sex is out there, on tap, and easy to come by". P21 There are funny chapters like Identifying Suitable Specimens. Where the boys are: Singles events, at work, in pubs & clubs, somewhere mundane, amongst your exes, on someone else's arm, online... Dating: The 'Nice Guy', the 'Gold Digger', The Cyber, The Potential Soulmate, The Sensitive Type... One of my fave chapters (not really my fave, but one that struck me) was Chapter 5 -

I have to admit 2009 was not a good year for me, but I have found new strength in me that I never knew existed. One of the hardest emotions a human can feel is heartbreak, you feel like your whole life has collapsed and you just want the pain to disappear..but as they say, time will heal itself and you will realise after a while that life just goes on. However, I found a 'new' me, or what my friend Winnie would say, "the old Eunice is back again!" Experiencing single life was daunting at first but I managed to push on and made new wonderful and exciting friends. I really cherish my friends and family who have been supportive, understanding and empathic all this time. I was able to put myself first again and do things that I really wanted to do. This year, I'm celebrating NYE away from Singapore with friends. It's gonna be fun and it's the first time I'm celebrating it away since I moved back in 2003!

Last night Winnie and I met up for some finger food & drinks at Clarke Quay. We decided upon Mulligan's Irish Pub which proved to be an excellent choice! It was not overly crowded, the food and service was good, and we were seated next to the stage where a guy was tuning out beautiful (if somewhat sad for two newly single ladies) love ballads, nevertheless, the singer sang exceptionally well.

Males versus Females on Sexual Aggression

As I'm drafting up my last sociology essay on gender differences, I got to thinking about sexual aggression between the sexes after some careful recent observation. It appears that times are changing fast on the social circuit as individuals are out like never before being more 'daring' and 'aggressive'. Does our societal norms exert pressure on individuals to behave in certain socially acceptable and appropriate ways?

What is deemed acceptable and appropriate anyway?

Alcohol seems to be playing an active role in socialising I see people downing down their drinks, girls and guys alike, as alcohol is deemed as a 'wonder drug' on boosting their confidence maybe...or just wanting to have that 'high' feeling

A crowded club, a crowded disco, a crowded dancefloor where you bump sweat with everyone else as you succumb to the alcohol magic flowing through your veins. Teenagers and young adults out having fun, seducing each other or just having a wild time but nonetheless, when sexual attraction is encountered, which sex is the more aggressive one? Research has always found men to be the dominant one, but as I have recently observed and discovered, it seems that young women these days are more sexually aggressive then men themselves.

To my dismay, I've also observed guys downing down drinks and seconds later pukes...

I've observed girls barely into their 20s high on alcohol, falling over guys, and also being sexually aggressive in their behaviour, more so than the men they are attracting.

What happened to a glass of wine over dinner, a romantic stroll under the moonlight and some gentle flirting? Are young individuals able to alter their attitude to more 'romantic' encounters or is aggressive flirting the norm of society these days on attracting a mate?

Imagine a clear night, the ocean a drop away, there's a brilliantly lit beach hut with a bright, yellow neon sign, rustic unpolished wooden tables scatter about the al fresco bar, planes flying high and you can smell the fresh, salty air...

My friend Bill and I had a lovely dinner at East Coast last night, where he brought us to Sunset Bay Garden Bar for a relaxed dinner and drinks. We ordered the chicken bbq salad and a smoked salmon pizza to share. The salad was average but I thought the pizza was somewhat small but flavourful, with a nice thin-based, textured crust.

Dallas Restaurant & Bar

I had lunch with a friend today who brought me to Dallas Restaurant & Bar at Clarke Quay. The bar is situated downstairs and the restaurant is located upstairs. The interior of the bar is decked out in tones of red and black. Upstairs the restaurant is decorated in a la' fine dining concept with perfectly white tablecloths and plush comfortable seats.

Our food arrived quickly and the service was impeccable. The menu is extensive however we chose to order from their new set lunch menu.

For Starters, we had Soup of the Day which was Cream of Spinash. I did not try the soup but I believe it was good since my friend finished it. We also ordered the Crab and Prawn Fritters which was nicely flavored and cooked.

For the main course we ordered the Baby Back Pork Ribs with their Fiery sauce, which came with a big portion of potato wedges. The ribs were delicious, soft and tender meat flavoured with their tangy and slightly spicy seasoning. We also ordered the Pan Fried Pacific Dory which was served with creamy mash. The serving was huge! The dory was absolutely tender, the creamy white flesh melts in your mouth with each bite. For dessert we shared a chocolate brownie served with a scoop of lush vanilla ice cream.

Everything from starters to dessert was presented beautifully and the food was excellent.

When we came back to the hotel in the late afternoon/early evening exhausted from our day of shopping, Hilton surprised us, or rather Winnie with a small birthday cake (as it was her birthday!) What a very nice surprise indeed! And we were starving so after some crazy picture taking and all, Winnie made a wish, blew out the candle, and cut the cake in half. We finished the cake real quick! Delicious! Ok, our last night in Bangkok, we were 'tricked' by the cab driver, walked through Patpong market (I think thats what its called) which was a nightmare to me as every few seconds guys would come up to me (sometimes touch me to get my attention - which believe me I was not fond of at all) to ask me if I was interested in going to 'adult shows'. Of course I was not, but it was very irritating to be stopped and harrassed so many times so eventually I was glad to get out of there... Then we went to get a massage...after sitting down for two minutes, it started pouring outside, like REALLY pouring...we thot a little rain never hurt anyone. We were wrong. When we stepped out maybe 2 hours or so later.........the streets were FLOODED. I'm not kidding. We couldn't get a cab coz we didn't err......want to step or walk through the dirty water which by then was halfway between your ankle and your knee. No thanks. Well, in the end, we did managed to get a cab and gladly returned back to the hotel. It's 11pm and we're hungry. So we order room service! Fried calamari Hilton style!

Late night supper! Fried calamari, fries, and two scoops of yummy ice cream to share. Not sure why there was a salad, we didn't order it nor did we touch the salad! Beer for Winnie and a glass of sparkling wine for me. We munched on our supper while enjoying a very interesting episode of Desperate Housewives!

Tomorrow morning I've to be at the airport at 5am coz Winnie and I are flying to Bangkok! I've been looking forward to 'getting away' since the incident and I really hope this trip will help in mending my life back together. This will be my third time there and Bangkok is truly a place for great shopping, cheap bargains and good food! In my previous travels to Thailand, I've found the Thai hospitality very welcoming and I'm very much looking forward to going there again!

I don't like to write negative stuff on my blog so here is something a bit more 'uplifting' so to say. Life for me for the past two weeks has been rather shitty. I had an exam, assignments, got dumped, was (or rather in) a state of depression, work, etc...but I keep telling myself that life must go on. On Saturday, my good friend Winnie and I decided to go to Clarke Quay and later on venture to nearby Double O for some drinks and dancing into the wee hours of the night! Happy birthday to the 22 year old guy fresh out of NS and his two mates who came over and 'invited' us to join them..and to the Californian guy who was chatting to me who kept emphasizing to me about how he HATES living and working in Singapore...Whats that about dude? Yes, I was bored (and irritated) by you so I just left.

It has been a while since I last updated my blog. The short story is that I am now single after almost six years of being with someone. I can feel a knife in my chest, constricting my breaths. Sometimes it pushes itself deeper, so much so that the pain is almost unbearable. The mornings and nights are the hardest. How do you go about each day, pretending to smile and laugh when your heart is aching so much you just want to disappear completely. The thoughts in my head comes in waves. Sometimes when I'm busy, the waves are shallow, other times the waves are so high I wish I can just drown myself in it. But when I'm lucky, I follow Freud's theory and repress my thoughts. I try to push my thoughts away from my consciousness.

Now is a time for self-reflection. I believe when something tragic like this happen to two people who had loved each other for a long time, it takes time to heal the wounds. There is no blame here, only sorrow. Deep sorrow, and regret.

As time goes by, and when the knife slowly pulls itself out, life must go on.

For I have hope.

First attempt at making earrings...

Ok, so I've always been a thread and needle kinda gal, so beads and wire is really new to me. I read up and did some research on how to make a pair of simple earrings, then today I went to get the supplies and here is the first three pairs I made. Once I've perfected the 'loop' (which was a bummer coz I had a pair of round nose pliers in my basket, then put it back deciding I don't really need it - big mistake) so anyway, once I've perfected to wrap the loop, I'll be making more earrings and they'll be up on my etsy shop soon. These are made using swarovski crystal beads and hung on 925 silver ear wires.

The first pair of earrings below is truly a beautiful green and really sparkles in the light, also made of swarovski crystals and hung on 925 silver ear wires.

The middle pair of earrings in the picture is made of Japanese seed beads and swarovski crystals hung on 925 silver ear wires.

Lately I've been feeling a little homesick, and sometimes think about going back to Cessnock where I spent my childhoodish turned teenage years. Cessnock is just a little rural town some two hours drive from Sydney, it is also located in The Hunter Valley area, the ever popular wine region. Although now, I wouldn't call it quite 'rural' anymore coz new shops and shopping centres are continuingly being built in town. Taking a much needed break from my exams revisions.. Last weekend, B and I went to an aquarium near my place and got Jack & Allie a new tank. We found this pretty solid looking half glass tank for only $13 and a new rock/bridge for only $7! What a bargain! Here you can see the lovebirds stealing a kiss on their new rock.

The only thing I can say is that this was a total waste of my $18.95!! I went to submit my essay yesterday evening and stopped by the bookshop. It was an impulse buy, and the book was wrapped in plastic so I wasn't able to browse thru it.. The cover is beautiful, I must admit, but that's it. The author talks about other vampire movies most of the time, there are pages and pages of quizzes which I can't even be bothered, and I found the entire book absolutely boring, not only about the content inside, but the author's style of writing puts you to sleep.

I have been crazed all week! Three assignments due this week, and I've been busy searching for research journals online, reading, highlighting, drafting, amending, etc.. First was for my journalism elective in which I chose to write about Singapore's media system and its journalistic attitutes (or lack of I should say) and how the government has since from the beginning followed an authoritarian philosophy which pretty much used its power to control and censor the media. After that, I went straight on to my Ethics essay for my Psychology unit. This one involved ethical codes and guidelines to follow, etc.. My third assignment due this week is for my interpretation and meaning in sociology unit, which I already started last week, thank god, is on post-structuralist feminism. I really like this topic, and so far have found it quite interesting, especially Marxist feminism. Alright, I guess it's back to drafting and amending my feminsim essay now...but after this, I think I really need a drink.

Mother's Day stitches

In celebration of Mother's Day this year, I decided to stitch a little something onto bath towels for my *future* mother in law. I bought a soft fluffy cream coloured towel and a matching slighter darker cream aida band to match. I wanted to give it a romantic vintage feel to it so I stitched using dusty rose and mint green colours. On the sides of MOTHER, there are three tiny flowers and in one corner I stitched MD 2009 to give it a personal touch. Then I thought I might as well stitch one for my *future* father in law too. But I had a hard time deciding the colour of the towel for this one. I must have stood at the towels section in the store for a whole hour! At last, I decided on keeping it plain and simple (since he is a man), so I decided on a white towel, and I stitched the word FATHER in a smoke blue colour, and on each side there are a pair of palm trees.

When I finished, I realised it looks like a towel from a beach resort!

Here are the pair together. I hope B's parents will like their Mother's Day present.

I also decided on stitching one for my aunt later on in the week. She loves the colour purple so I got her a nice lilac coloured towel and used a darker mint green/aqua colour to stitch her name.

Saturday at MacRitchie..

For a while now, B and I have made it a habit on going to MacRitchie on weekends for our 'exercise'. By exercise, I mean a 12km hike through MacRitchie Reservoir. We went yesterday, and it was boiling hot, one of the first days where it didn't rain for once. I must tell you this, at the beginning of every walk, B would look excitedly for "the perfect stick". Don't ask me why. It's a guy thing. You'll have a better understanding after reading the book "Why men don't have a clue and women always need more shoes." Yesterday's walk was no different, and B did find his stick, but it had other branches attached to it lying on the ground. I watched him as he picked it up, and *easily* tore off the remaining branches. Honestly, I was actually quite amazed at how strong he was at that moment coz those branches looked kinda thick to me. And so, he had his perfect stick..

On most of our walks at MacRitchie, we usually come across groups of monkeys (some of them doing the deed, some eating, some picking stuff off each other), very fascinating to watch. There are also snakes, giant forest ants which I do not have a liking for (but B are fascinated by them for some reason), lizards and squirrels.

On my walks, I bring along with me my wristlet which consist of my mobile, a lip balm and a tissue. I guess this is typical boy-girl behaviour. Man walks with stick, girl walks with purple bag swinging off her wrist.

This reservoir is huge and beautifully maintained. It's definately a place to go to de-stress yourself.

Well, what can I say? I obviously knew the Twilight Sega was HUGE, comparable to Harry Potter, but for some unknown reason, it never interest me until I saw the movie last week. Yep, I think I may be one of the very few people who saw the movie before reading the books. Once I started, it was very hard to put down. Stephanie Meyer's writing is very entertaining and absorbs you right into the heart of the book and its characters, especially Edward & Bella. I started reading Twilight Wednesday evening after I submitted my sociology essay. I finished the book at 3am in the morning. The next day, I went to purchase New Moon and Eclipse. Again, it took me about a day to finish one although I must admit I 'rushed' through the parts with Jacob so I could be absorbed with my Edward again.. I loved the first part of Breaking Dawn, I was so happy reading the star-crossed lovers fairytale, and Bella's funny attempts on seducing Edward. Then things went downhill from there, not so much the book itself, but because I didn't like reading the fairytale and then quite suddenly it was all very tragic..
